Workforce challenges have been a priority for the UK veterinary profession for a long time. There are plenty of anecdotes about the causes and what the solutions should be but very little researched evidence. But thanks to collaborative research between the British Veterinary Association and the University of Exeter we now have fascinating evidence. In this lecture we will explore what a workforce crisis looks like, what really keeps vets happy in their jobs and how motivation, ambition and satisfaction are linked. We will also look at how gender discrimination is real in the profession, how it manifests and why it may be happening. While this lecture will explore and explain the research it will also look at parallels with other professions and what we can learn from them and what practically this research may mean for practices.
